Enrichment Interview with Donald Davis

Enrichment students conducted an interview with Donald Davis who wrote a "Message in a Bottle" back in the 1980's. This message was found some 20 years later and began the Renew the Rivers program to clean up the Coosa River.

Field Trip to Alabama Power Environmental Center Water Course

Our Enrichment students really enjoyed the trip to visit Alabama Power Water Course. This was in conjunction with a study on the severe drought affecting Alabama at this time. The trip to the Water Course was an interactive, hands-on exhibit where students learned many important aspects of water: water conservation, hydroelectricity, etc. Students took a simulated helicopter ride over Alabama’s waterways and learned features of the waterways; they took a simulated tour of Mitchell Dam to view the hydroelectric facility and tested their knowledge of water facts in a fun game show called “Water Whys”.

Andrew & Clay chose this picture because it looked extremely hot as conditions could be during a drought.

Alabama Drought Pictures

Today, Enrichment students looked at images from the drought in our state. They chose images and e-mailed them to me. In this process, they learned how to save an image to the desktop and attach it to an e-mail. Here are the images they chose and an explanation as to why they picked those particular images.

Enrichment Drought Project

Our enrichment students are learning how to use new technology tools as we research a current problem in our state- the ongoing drought. We will be talking about how to conserve water and the effects of the drought in our area. We are participating in an online collaborative project with other students from around the world. The project is titled "Down the Drain".

Students- your assignment is to

1. go to this site

2. Choose an image from the drought

3. e-mail a picture to me at swills@gcs.k12.al.us . Include why you chose this picture.

Also, we will be using a new tool called "Google Documents". I would like for you to

1. go to this site

3. Click on the document titled "Drought Facts" with your name on it and type in your answers.

School Begins!! New AR program

It has sure been a hot beginning for school, but the students seem to be adjusting well. We have started library classes this week and students will be bringing home books this week. Please familiarize yourself with our policies concerning damaged and lost books.
We are very excited about our new AR program. Students will now have access to over 100,000 quizzes. This means any book that has an AR test- students will be able to test on that book at school. Students will not be able to take tests at home. If you have a book you would like to check and see if it has a test- just follow these instructions: (1) go to www.renlearn.com (2) click on "Store" (3) click on "Quiz Store" (4) type in the name of the book or author. There is a direct link within this blog. It is really very simple. Students have been learning how to take tests on our new AR program this week in the computer lab. We hope this will be much easier for you to find books. We want to instill a love of reading in our students- hopefully this will help.
I am in the process of scheduling parent helpers and library aides. I will post these when the schedules are completed.

Mabry Online

While attending the NECC Technology conference in Atlanta, Mrs. Rogers, Mrs. Goodwin, Dr. Berry and I were priveledged to hear Dr. Tim Tyson, principal of Mabry Jr. High. Each year, students from Mabry participate in a video contest. Students prepare videos around a theme. This past year, the theme was "Making our World a Better Place". I was very impressed at the level of knowledge of technology these students portrayed in the making of these videos. Click on the link below to preview some of these videos. You will not be disappointed.

New AR program

We are very excited at Mitchell to begin a new web-based AR program. This program will give students many more opportunities to take quizzes as they will now have access to more than 100,000 AR quizzes. This will also help parents when looking for AR books to know that if a book has an AR test- then students will be able to take the test for that book. This program will also give teachers more tools to help students become lifelong readers. If you would like to know if a book has an AR test- just click on the store and type in the name of the book.
